Marcelo demonstrates some of the finer points of his passing game against the Half Guard while standing, and versus the dreaded De-La-Riva Guard: Regardless of the particular pass used, it is crucial to establish the grips you need; if your opponent makes his first, grab onto something and anchor your arm so it isn't idle. When landing into the Reverse Half Guard with the Back Step Pass, always try to yank your knee free -you may even slip completely out, as is often the case against De-La-Riva. Never allow the De-La-Riva hook to bother the far leg; pivot on your lead leg and use the back step to clear out the pesky hook. The idea here is to always reset back to a safe, comfortable position from which to initiate your plans of attack or passing.
