Elbow Control Armbar from Butterfly
Jon asks Marcelo for advice on how to refine the Elbow Control Armbar from Butterfly (Hizagatame, Shotgun Armlock, et al). Marcelo expresses two particular variations, both dependent on where he comes from based on his opponent's reaction; one where he elevates his hips underneath the elbow, while the other hyperextends it by swinging his leg from the side. Both opportunities are not directly sought after, but rather develop when a kneeling opponent carelessly neglects to protect an Underhook or Collar-Grip. One possible proactive setup could come from pulling directly into the Armlock from the Standing Position. Marcelo believes in the successfulness of similar flying attacks to the opponent's arm -- however, he finds that they prove difficult to practice in live training without inadvertently hurting your partner.
