Marcelo talks to Bryan about aspects of scrambling for nogi: The lowered coefficient of friction found in nogi affords one the ability to use speed to their advantage when trying to put their opponent in comprising positions; place emphasis on predicting the likeliness of your opponent's reactions to scenarios you've previously explored that branch into multiple options. Finding how to control a scramble is a matter of gaining experience in situations wherein you can readily switch directions, e.g. Half-Guard (top) into Back-Step, and vice versa, without giving your opponent an opportunity to meaningfully attack while you search for their defensive weaknesses. Develop tactics not only for bidirectional paths, but multiple directions that all connect back to a singular scenario of a scramble. N.b., whenever there is live-action on the mat, never post your arm behind you as a post while sitting down to rest; this will helpfully keep oneself safe from an accidental collision and consequent hyperextension of your elbow.
