Countering a Self-Reap
Paul presents a novel problem to Marcelo and they proceed to troubleshoot for it: Counterintuitively, a standing opponent may opt to forgo resisting the typical pressures asserted from the 1-Leg X-Guard by trying to 'noodle-out' of the hold; i.e. effectively placing themselves in a deep knee-reap and then slipping their foot free. While this tactic seems like a viable method of handling the position, it may not be without its particular drawbacks; e.g. the opponent's back becomes exposed, and might possibly be taken as a consequence, especially if it is facilitated with a strong grip on their belt. This self-imposed reap also flirts with the danger of inviting a potential calf-slicer attack to the trapped leg, if the guard-player is so inclined to warrant it. One could surmise the possibility of follow-up countermeasures in response to this scenario, but credence for viability requires the rigor of further experimentation.
