Marcelo, Orlando, and German help Justin better understand the heuristics behind recovering the Butterfly-Guard against Toreando-Passing: If you can remain sitting upright versus oncoming pressure, frame against your opponent's head, shoulders, or hips while you work to free your legs from their grips on your pants; if they do not readily release them to shift towards your chest, apply short kicks to help strip at least one leg clear. If your opponent drives forward and places you onto your back, continue to insert frames to manage distance and keep them from getting too close. When they let go of a pant-grip, immediately begin working that leg back in between you and your opponent; whether with both or just a single top/bottom knee, wedge your shins inside to replace your hands from posting. If you cannot find the room to recover fully back inside, use your frames and knee-shield to buy enough time for a hip-escape (pushing off the ground with your bottom-foot in this particular case) before driving your knee up through the middle.
