Guys have given me problems when they have gone the other way with pass, under the under-hooked leg as well.

Thanks for asking him about it!

Josh

RE: Need help countering this Pass

Awesome, thanks for the feedback!

RE: Need help countering this Pass
rt8498 (4/25/2012)
How do I counter the type of pass where my opponent is low and smashing on my hips and legs, has one inside pants grip pinning my leg down, and an underhook on my other leg?

I feel helpless because both my hooks and hips are killed

a video that demonstrates my problem starts at 1:10

Any tips or video reference would be appreciated
I just showed Marcelo that part of the video. He suggests that you need to try to free your bottom knee out, and if you can't, get ready to block the arm from coming up to grab your collar. If he makes the mistake of crossing his arm over your body, hit him hard with the "Elbow Push Escape". Jostling him back and forth too with your trapt leg isn't a bad idea either.

At the very least, he's thinking about the position now. Perhaps in the future we can dedicate a video to this particular situation. Keep training hard!

RE: Need help countering this Pass

This type pass is very common in my academy. This is the sweep that most higher level guys at my academy use to break the position. It may look like you need flexibility or strength for this move, but you don't. The person on top cannot keep their weight on you or they will get swept, and even if the person backs away and the helicopter sweep fails, you can easily spin back to guard with the pass prevented.

RE: Need help countering this Pass

Usually pushing down his/her head against the passing side tends to break much of the preassure and control of the pass. Cause as long as the head stays glued against the hip it hard to both work the hooks or move his/her base.

I'll see if i can find some video showing this later.

RE: Need help countering this Pass

I have the same problem with this position, the underhook on my leg isn't the problem, I just run the "elbow push series". What beats me is the knee over pass or they put their head in my hip pocket, sprawl and s-sit to side control. Thanks for any help.

- 1stripe blue belt

RE: Need help countering this Pass

Thanks for linking the video example, that definitely helped.

Hmmm... I remember several years ago Marcelo had a whole series of sweeps and submissions from this guard position, but has abandoned most of it because he decided it didn't work on everyone (particularly elite competition).

From time to time, I'll catch him playing from there and setting up a "triangle", and I asked him about teaching it. I'll remind him again about the position and see if he wants to teach anything from there again.

The "triangle" set-up was fairly simple; use your leg to press heavy onto his underhook, making him post his hand on the mat, and sneak out your bottom leg to lock the "triangle". It's not tagged but I know I've seen him do it once or twice in sparring. If he does an instructional on it, I'll tag it from now on.

In the meantime, I would get ready to hit the "Elbow Push Escape" when he exposes his triceps on the pass. Remember, if he isn't holding your head, there is no reason for you to lay on your back, so sit up.

Thanks for your question, my friend (:

Need help countering this Pass

How do I counter the type of pass where my opponent is low and smashing on my hips and legs, has one inside pants grip pinning my leg down, and an underhook on my other leg?

I feel helpless because both my hooks and hips are killed

a video that demonstrates my problem starts at 1:10

Any tips or video reference would be appreciated
