Hand Fighting from Side Control
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo breaks down his measures of guard recovery: [I] If you can Hand-Fight to avoid letting your opponent make a grip to push you flat for a pass, do so; otherwise, work to break off his grip before he passes around your leg. If he pushes your leg away and you can still catch him with your far Butterfly hook, use it to pull yourself back to face him. If you cannot reach with your hook because he leg is too far away, but you've manage to break off his grip, utilize the Hip Roll Escape. If you didn't break off the grip yet and he is advancing closer to the pass's finish, abandon the grip break and turn inside to frame against the Crossface. If there is distance between you, swing your outside leg back inside to help separate and recover your guard with the Foot Wipe. If he is still on his knees and is driving forward, use your frame to help hip escape and bring your bottom leg through for the recovery. If he didn't make a grip on your gi yet with his far hand, try passing it by your head and implement the Elbow Push Escape. If he switches his base to hunker down on your side, sit up and execute the Biceps Push Escape. [II] If he manages to catch your gi and prevent the Elbow Push, drop the hammer on the back of his arm and try flipping him over to the other side with the Hip Turn technique. If he let's go to stay on top, find his triceps and perform the Elbow Push Escape.
