2 Part Lesson — Marcelo breaks the Spider Guard: [I] First, find your base and keep your balance on your feet; do not sit back on your heels or lean forward onto your toes, but do not stay flat on your feet. Make counter-grips anywhere possible; grab anything nearby to prevent your opponent from manipulating your easily. You must deal with one side of the Spider Guard at a time, either the Stirrup (Foot-On-Biceps) or the Lasso (Shin-On-Biceps from Outside-In). To break the Stirrup, use your knee to bump his foot off of your arm and quickly pin his leg with your knee to prevent a Triangle. Next, break the Lasso by circling your hand to the outside of his leg and finger-walking up his pants until his grip pops. [II] If you cannot readily take away the Stirrup first, break the Lasso beforehand; place weight on top of his shin with your shoulder until you can step over his foot and sit down on his leg. Take your time to yank your hand out of his grip as you maintain your base in the position. Once broken, do not let him remake his grip or else you will have to start all over. After you are free from the Lasso, then can you deal with the Stirrup and initiate a pass.
