3 Part Lesson —Marcelo cracks open a stubborn Closed Guard: [I] If you detect problems when standing up from your knees inside the Closed Guard, e.g. your opponent looks to attack your legs, change up your tactics by bringing the opponent with you using collar grips. If you cannot readily break his guard open by pushing down on his knee before he leans away, dedicate both hands to one knee for the break. If you can pummel for an Underhook to help keep the opponent near while you work at his legs you may; however, if at any point your arm begins extending away from your body, release your arm and either drop back down to safety or challenge the legs with both hands. [II] If you encounter difficulty holding the opponent close when you work to break open his legs while standing, pummel an Underhook before hopping up to your feet and raising up. Be wary of attacks to your Underhook before lift. Protect it with your head and opposite arm. Grab a hold of the collar to help keep his body close while standing. [III] Make a quick grip switch from the collar to the pants when breaking open the legs. You may need to make several small adjustments before obtaining an ideal point of leverage to break free. Immediately look to dive your knee through the Open Guard and avoid closure of the Full Guard again.
