Straight Footlock Escape from Open Guard
3 Part Lesson — Marcelo offers advice in regards to defending the Straight Ankle-Lock (aka Achilles Lock, Botinha, et al.): [I] Immediately sit up and close the distance between you and the opponent when he or she falls back with your foot under their armpit. The idea is to prevent the opponent from separating your foot away from your hips and upper body. Fight to get on top with the sole of your trapped foot flat on the mat under your weight and defensive grips. Once atop, slowly begin to clear away the opponent's hold around your leg until you are free to remove your foot from the threat and possibly pass. [II] Remember to bend your arms when holding the grips on the opponent's collar. If you aren't straining your biceps, you are not actively engaging the correct defensive pull that will keep you close to your foot and away from tapping. [III] Do not become complacent with the top position and your foot hidden underneath your base after getting on top; you are only one quick off-balance away from danger. Do not begin to pass until you foot is free from the opponent's control.
