Breaking the Closed Guard
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo deals with a clingy Closed Guard player: [I] If your opponent tries to sit up and pursue an upper body clinch as you stand up inside their Closed Guard, try to push them away before they can make a solid connection. You cannot dig your arm underneath the legs to break open the Closed Guard if your opponent is too close. [II] If your opponent solidly connects to your upper body after you've stood up inside their Closed Guard, don't lean back anymore and do not dig your arm under the legs; instead, hunch forward and place both palms on the opponent's hip bones, pressing downward. Maintain this posture until the opponent tires and releases the lock. Prepare to control the top position with a pass or at least force Half Guard to keep the opponent grounded after he break.
