Breaking the Closed Guard

2 Part Technique - When a much larger opponent closes guard around you, there are no guard-breaking tricks, and the best course of action is to handfight for control and Stand. Step up to your feet, remove any grips on your wrists or collar, and pop your hips into his as you bring your posture upward away from his chest. Once upright, start digging for an underhook on his leg to punch open his guard and immediately prepare to pass after his ankles uncross and his hips drop back down to the mat. Keep in mind that if you stand in his guard, he will oftentimes look to sweep you by grabbing onto your ankles. Prevent this by kicking free your opposite foot in a laterally circular path as you break.
