3 Part Lesson — Marcelo teaches a dominating Closed Guard Pass with high reward: [I] If you cannot wrangle your opponent's wrists to stand up inside his Closed Guard, thumblessly press away his biceps so you can bait his arm into an Arm Trap. Once you grab his wrist behind his back, post on his shoulder to gain posture and then jam the inside of his leg to break open the guard for the pass. [II] If you notice your opponent crossing his arm for your opposite leg during the test, be quick to catch it on the second attempt, otherwise you run the risk of getting caught in a bad spot. If need be, frame against his face to gain posture for the break and pass. If he catches you in Half Guard, switch hands with the Arm Trap Grip and execute the Turning Pass. [III] It is important to make sure that while you transfer grips, you don't allow any space around the wrist. Also, there is no need to utilize your thumb in a typical grabbing manner; place all fingers on the same side to block the opponent's escape.
