Marcelo remarks on how he appreciates his students' shared affinity for training both in Gi and Nogi, regardless of which rule-set upcoming tournaments call for—even as far as sparring Nogi immediately before the Gi World Championships (or contrastly Gi, before the ADCC). Marcelo realizes that reliance on the pro's and con's of required attire (or lack thereof) is a weakness that can cause one to easily blame his or her shortcomings in a match as circumstantial rather than correctly owning up to the responsibility of their mistakes. Both styles of grappling complement one another; as Gi facilitates precise defense and quick decision-making, whereas Nogi hones your offensive skills and teaches the power of tight positioning. The proof of concept is undeniable: both Bernardo Faria and Dominyka Obelenyte of MGA later went on to win not only their respective weight classes at Black Belt, but they also took home gold in the Absolute Divisions.
