3 Part Lesson — Marcelo troubleshoots the finish for a Guillotine after getting taken down: [I] Capitalize on your opponent's downed position if you stop his Takedown with a Sprawl; don't let him back up to his feet where he gets another try. Keep him down with the Front Headlock and see if you can spin behind for Seatbelt Control, and Hooks or the Crucifix. If your opponent does build back up from underneath and brings your hips down to the mat, make sure you place his head down toward the mat and not up above yourself. Run your legs away from his hands and retake the Front Headlock Position before setting up the Guillotine Choke. [II] If you opponent does manage to capture your legs, insert a Butterfly Hook to help lift up the opponent and toss him away from controlling your legs for a pin. [III] Counters work best when you react and continue to react early; if your opponent hits a move in good time, there is not much you can do unless you work to undo his positioning as soon as possible and not after it is underway.
