3 Part Lesson -- Paul shows attacks from Open Guard: Starting from Collar & Sleeve Control with a foot placed on the far biceps (aka Dariush Guard, Classic Guard, Tripod Guard, et al.) if your opponent recedes away and lessens the pressure of his or her hip on the sole of your foot, you can execute a Hook Sweep from Open Guard commonly referred to as a Sickle Sweep (sometimes called a Tripod Sweep in Brazil, while the American version of the Tripod Sweep is called a Cross-Grip Sweep). Semantics aside, developing this attack is a central part of an offensive Open Guard. Pick the far ankle, rotating onto your opposite hip to reach the opponent's foot with your hand, and kick out the opposite foot with your leg coming from the arm. [01:11] If your opponent's ankle is too far to reach with your hand, take your foot from the biceps and create a hook behind the knee. Switch the sleeve grip into your hand that was holding onto the collar and try to circle the hand under your wrist. Use the hook behind the knee to help scoot your hips next to the near foot and grab behind the ankle with your free hand. Launch the opponent backwards by kicking with your foot on the hip and lifting with the hook behind the knee. [03:36] If your opponent latches onto your lapel, look for opportunities to raise your hips up and attack for the Triangle. If your opponent uses his or her free hand to remove your foot from the hip, you can clear over the shoulder and lock on the choke.
