6 Part Lesson -- Marcelo demonstrates how to maintain an under-emphasized dominant control: Improve from the Front Headlock Position by clearing the opponent's arm and running around to take the Back. Squeeze the elbow away from the outside to make room for your knee to get behind and help you spin towards Seatbelt Control. If your opponent begins to back out of the position, sprawl and circle with the Front Headlock forcing the opponent to break down; pull the arm away from posting as you drop your weight downward through the opponent's shoulder. Look to spin around for the Back when the opponent finds his or her base after the breakdown. [04:17] If your opponent builds up to All-Fours, bringing his or her knees up off the mat to help pull away, use the Front Headlock to drag the opponent back down to the mat. Continue snapping the opponent forward until they break down back to his or her knees. [09:01] Mix pulling down and forward with pulling down and towards the side to prevent your opponent from finding his or her base. You have to combine both motions to make it difficult for your opponent to follow and react in time. [11:11] When working to break your opponent down, keep your upper body held tightly in parallel with your opponent's upper body; if you loosen up your lock when you use your legs, you risk losing the position entirely. [13:02] Get used to training with different partners when drilling a particular technique so that you experience the same variability that you might encounter during a competition. Also, concentrate on your timing when a round of positional sparring starts; usually the first to act is the one who controls the match. [19:41] If your opponent sits down while held inside your Front Headlock, avoid letting him or her set their Butterfly-Hooks against your legs. Run your legs away from the opponent's legs when he or she looks to recover back their guard.
