4 Part Lesson -- Marcelo talks about the importance of grip-fighting (kumite-arasoi): The Double-Leg Takedown is unique in that you can apply it successfully on your opponent without having to make a grip beforehand; nearly every other tactic for bringing the fight to the ground requires that you attach to your opponent first to setup the technique (takedown or guard-pull). Train to be first. Make a same-side collar grip to ensure that you stay on the offensive and at the very least can remain somewhat neutral against your opponent's advances. [04:46] Fight to avoid letting your opponent control the opposite side after you've made your initial collar-grip. Win a grip on the wrist or sleeve to setup your next attack. [09:14] If your opponent is defending his or her collars well, grab onto their sleeve to gain an advantage. The grip is normally short-lived, but will give you time to initiate your move. This can be done with either the same-side or contralateral (cross-sleeve) grip. [11:58] If your opponent actively tries to make a grip on your gi before you have set your own, quickly strip it off and turn it into a favorable connection for yourself.
