2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo teaches Hand-Fighting: In order to gain favorable grips on your opponent (Kumigata), you must engage in the battle of denying your opponent's prefered controls as well (Kumite-Arasoi). Track your opponent's hands and prevent them from reaching past your own, while you look to secure his or her sleeve(s) or wrist(s). If your opponent grabs your Collar, respond with Kata-Eri-Hazushi or the Single Lapel Escape. Place both hands together and strike your opponent's wrist before they have a chance to settle their grip. If they do manage to harden their hand on your jacket, grab onto the sleeve and yank yourself free as you backpedal away. [05:15] If you cannot break your opponent's grip on your collar, neutralize their ability to apply Kuzushi by seeking counter-grips; typically in the manner of Collar & Elbow Control. Seek a low base and immediately react to any strong pulls with a takedown attempt. If you capture a Single, finish it by Running-the-Pipe.
