Obviating the Knee-Reap
Marcelo advises a student to be consciously aware of the specific configuration of leg entanglement he opts to employ in gi competition: Be wary of the direction your toes point when setting the exterior hook of your Single-Leg X-Guard (One-Legged X, One-Leg X, Snake/Anaconda/Sucuri-Guard, Foot-Lock Guard, Leg-Lock Guard, Slash-Guard, Noose, Ashigarami, et al.); make sure your foot does not medially cross over your opponent's hip when holding onto their respective foot for an attack, or if it is loaded and bearing weight from ground support. Pay extra attention when playing a scramble during a leg-attack; only roll away from the opposite, un-attacked leg and don't grab onto your opponent's lower leg if you are unsure of whether or not you are reaping.
