Marcelo & Matheus demonstrate which techniques you should never try when sparring on the feet: Don't ever jump-short, hang, or swing yourself to take your partner's back; you may drop to the mat or kick out their knees from behind with your feet, but never fall with your weight in a trajectory that intercepts with the medial or lateral directions of your opponent's knees. Don't stay facing away from your opponent after a turning-throw; the longer you remain with the back of your legs exposed to your opponent, the more likely it is that they could potentially induce you to suffer an injury. In the same way that you shouldn't jump incorrectly to take-the-back, don't offer a backwards stance for your opponent to take advantage of whether correctly performed or not. If you misstep or fail to launch your opponent, immediately disconnect and retract your hips away from the position to best avoid the threat of potential injury. When performing a Single-Leg Take-Down, do not let your head stray towards the outside. Keep your head on the inside of your opponent's body to ensure that you are never on the receiving end of a 'burial' (spiking your opponent's head with body sacrifice; e.g. sumigaeshi, DDT, et al.).
