Marcelo explains to Benny the need to adjust for traction (or lack thereof) while passing: Rather than attempting passes which require heavy, continuous pressure to circumvent an opponent's guard-play, one should look for shortened, continual advancements when faced with less than ideal conditions regarding friction and contact. If your opponent is able to absorb and redirect your energy by sliding out of danger, switch up your tactics by introducing small deflections before making a jump into an improved angle of attack. If for some reason the surface you are pushing off of cannot sustain your base for proper force generation, apply movements that are in parallel to the ground against your opponent to impose an off-balance for a takedown or pass.
