2-Part Advanced Lesson -- Fabio Gurgel masterfully teaches a sweeping combination starting from the De-la-Riva Guard: If your opponent is standing above you while you are supinated with your legs directed upward in an Open-Guard, hold onto your opponent's same-side sleeve to prevent them from immediately taking your foot off of their hip and placing you into Headquarters (Split-Guard, R-Guard, Miragaia, Leg-Drag, et al.). Use your grip on their sleeve, a grip around their near-ankle and foot-on-hip to stretch out their base while inserting your outside-foot to compose what is known commonly known as "de la Riva Guard" (a.k.a. Pudding-Guard, Jello-Guard, Okano-Guard, Outside Hook-Guard, et al.; hereinafter referred to simply as "DLR"). Use this DLR-Hook to anchor yourself as you swing your free-leg down and across to sit upright onto their lead-leg for a Single from Sit-Up Guard. Time your transition so that your opponent cannot meet your advance by countering with an Under-Hook & Knee-Slide Pass; when your opponent goes to push down onto your knee to relieve pressure from your DLR-Hook, sit-up and pass their far-sleeve through their legs and into your opposite hand while latching onto their near-knee for a Single. If your opponent has grip on your pants, strip it by stomping your leg straight as you yank your same-side sleeve-grip before passing it through to your other hand. Once this 'Pump-handle' Grip is set to help secure your Single-Leg Control, grab their far-collar, place your forehead against their midsection, and post your outside-leg to help drive and steer your opponent to the mat in a smooth downward spiral (similar in execution to Sumo's Head-Pivot Throw, 'Zubuneri' technique. [2:16] If your opponent postures up strongly to break your grip on their sleeve, quickly feed their far-side lapel's skirt-tail into your newly freed hand to replace it with an upgrade in overall control (n.b., always make a thumb-down, palm-out grip when securing their lapel into the Pump-handle Grip; yanking it out of your hand this way is significantly harder to accomplish when it is pulled against your palm versus out of through your curled fingers). Now that your Single-Leg Control is much tighter than before (albeit without control over their far-arm to prevent posting against the initial sweeping movement with their sleeve), you can grab onto their far-collar, post your head, and wrestle-up with a lapel-assisted Single-Leg Take-Down. However, if your opponent drives their hips forward with their knee still trapped tightly against your chest, switch for the Reverse-DLR (or Inverted de-la-Riva Guard) and elevate them overhead. When your opponent attempts to recover their base from your Reverse-DLR Hook-Lift, reach out and grab their far-foot as you place your head against their inner-thigh (akin to a "Smith" Low-Single mixed with an Ankle-Pick), stepping up and driving them down to take top-position.
