3 Part Technique - If the opponent steps inside your butterfly too deeply; preventing you from attaining single leg control, and he holds your head; preventing you from retreating backward, you can still transition to the 1Leg X Guard by creating space from open guard. Holding his ankle, fall flat on your back and place your foot onto his hip to push off his forward pressure. Once enough space is created, replace your foot on his hip with the 1 Leg X by scooting under him and finishing the sweep. If he tries to cross his knee after you've created the space, he is open to single leg control and then your 1Leg X Guard Entry. Once in 1Leg X, the opponent will commonly attempt to counter by either removing your foot off his hip, or vaulting over your inside hook: If he tries to pry off your foot, quickly threaten his balance by rocking him back with the sweep. If he tries to pass over into mount, use your free hand to fend of his advance while you reinsert your bottom hook back against his leg, and reach for his near foot to finish the Ankle Pick Sweep from 1Leg X Guard.
