3 Part Technique - The principle of chaining your attacks is a vital concept for high-level grappling, in that, you must be ready to answer your opponent's counter to your initial set-up. If you can account for the variety of ways in which he may resist a technique, you will increase your success rate for the sweep: Seek your opponent's wrist from Butterfly, gripping his sleeve with your cross hand for 2on1 Control. Collect the material using the pistol grip so that your fist is protected against injury if he attempts to break the grip with his knee. Use the 2on1 to help scoot your hips forward, and close enough to establish Over Under Control for the Hook Sweep. If he retreats backward as you approach him for the Hook Sweep, you can always chase him forward until you close the distance. However, if he raises his knee off the mat and steps a foot up, you will not be able to make up for the distance he gains from his longer steps back. Abandon the initial plan for the Hook Sweep from Butterfly and instead, pick his leg on top of your shoulder with your hook for the Partial X-Guard. When he tries to break your pistol grip with his free hand, switch sleeves and rock your free leg for the sweep. If he stands up to break your 2on1 control, either sweep with the Push Kick for a parallel stance, or come up for the single when he is staggered.
