2 Part Technique - The Guillotine is more than just a submission to Marcelo; it's a versatile method of control against an opponent that he can deploy in a variety of situations in order to win the fight in a states of transition. In the context of being held inside the half guard without an underhook, Marcelo will use the Guillotine to make his opponent worried about the threat of the choke, regardless of whether or not he can actually finish. This in turn will distract the opponent long enough for him to finagle out of the half guard in the style of the Over Under or Turning Pass, and allow him to connect his hands together for a more successful finish, or to establish the pass with Underhook & Head Control. Another example, is when an opponent recovers Half Guard from being mounted. Rather than let things get worse, the Guillotine is available to slap on around the neck while the opponent pushes, and will buy Marcelo enough time to regain control over the position, and possibly finish.
