3 Part Lesson — Marcelo opens the Closed Guard by standing: [I] If your opponent isn't letting you easily stand up with control, perhaps by avoiding the hand-fight then attacking your legs, secure an Underhook and grab either his lapel or sleeve; next, while keeping your chests close, hoist your opponent into the air and work to uncross his ankles with pressure placed on his knee. When the guard breaks, drop down into at least Half Guard to begin passing. [II] If your opponent looks to attack you while he is suspended in the air, e.g. with a Choke, reach for his arm again and pull him back close to your chest. As soon as you have defended the threat, go back to putting pressure on the legs to break open his guard. [III] If your opponent leans back to attack your Underhook with an extension, simply go back to the ground to avoid the danger. Remember that your opponent's legs will eventually tire having to constantly fight gravity when hanging on.
