2 Part Lesson — Marcelo wants his students to ingrain two important reactions when it comes to dealing with leg-locks: [I] When standing up in a staggered-lead stance against a invert(-ed,-ing) open guard-player, be wary of two possible spinning entry methods of leg-entanglement; your opponent entering into Kuzure-Ashi-Garami from the inside into 50-Zero (aka 50/0, Fifty-Zero,D.O.A., Outside Sankaku, Inside-Saddle, et al.) and 50/50 (aka Fifty-Fifty, Cross-Outside-Ashi, et al.) from the Upside-Down/Inverted Guard. Immediately high-step out of the hold before it solidifies. Raise your knee straight up into your chest and prepare to do the same for the remaining opposite leg just in case there is a follow-up attack. If you are ensnared and cannot free your knee from the lock, quickly eject from the position. Extract your leg by kicking the opponent's butt in mid-air; if you are still stuck after falling onto the ground, keep your leg free out from underneath your weight so that you can continue to kick yourself free. [II] You may also need to kick your opponent after you escape the leg-lock so as to not end up on bottom.
