Lesson Part 1 of 2 -- Marcelo reiterates how to escape from the Double Lapel Choke or (Okuri-Eri-Jime; literally, the "Send-Away" Collar Strangle): When your opponent has the finishing grips in place for choking you with the Send-Away Collar Strangle, you must organize your base to fight for you. Don't let your opponent use his or her legs to push you down and slide away to hang your neck off of the collar-grip. Likewise, don't allow your opponent to bring you to their "strong-side," i.e., laying down on the side that places their choking arm on bottom underneath your head. Use your feet to push off of the mat into a bridge and walk yourself away from the strong-side. Ideally, make it to the weak-side, where you are aiming to place your head and shoulders onto the mat while protecting yourself from the choke. If you cannot readily advance to the weak-side, you can continue to work against your opponent's grips while lying directly above them in parallel. However, be wary of your opponent's efforts to push you down and away; keep your feet rooted into the mat.
