3 Part Lesson — Marcelo demonstrates a series off of the Guillotine from Butterfly when his opponent counters the elbow-on-top finish: [I] Apply the Guillotine from Butterfly when your opponent advances his head forward into the range of your arms. Use your legs to brace against further advance and also use your guard to steer him away from his 'escape-side', i.e. the side opposite of your choking arm. If the opponent counters by overhooking your arm, try scraping off his grip with your leg before attempting the finish. [II] If you cannot reach the opponent's arm with your leg to scrape off his counter, utilize the Guillotine Sweep to force him to release his hold and allowing you to place your elbow on top of his shoulder for the tap. [III] If the opponent gives the sweep, land in mount and look to scrape off the counter once more after loosening during the transition. If the Guillotine is unavailable due to a strong overhook, trade the Guillotine for strong Underhook & Head Control, finishing with either an Armbar or Triangle from Mount.
