Marcelo explains the idea of a "Side Guard". Sometimes, it is more energy efficient to let your opponent pass your guard and immediately defend his Side Control than it is to fend off his pass from a weak guard. Of course, this only applies when your opponent passes without first having a stable upper body control, e.g. Underhook and/or Crossface.
