2 Part Lesson — Marcelo explains situational Hand-Fighting inside Closed Guard: [I] It is imperative that you dismantle the beginning of your opponent's Closed Guard Sweep by disrupting his grips before he has a chance to implement them in his technique. In the case of the Flower or Pendulum Sweep(s), immediately intercept your opponent's hand before he has a chance to make his grip on your pants. If it is already set, step your foot up to post against the target space he intends to bring you toward. You cannot proceed forward with your own plans without first protecting yourself from each piece that your opponent sets in motion for attack. [II] Properly respond to every move your opponent makes; but if he avoids the exchange, and waits for you to stand before he attacks, take note of his attempt and avoid it the second time around. Again, you can't advance without dealing with the grips your opponent has made, and the potential consequences involved therein.
