Gotta cosign Raptorbjj.

For the past couple of years, Ryan has really moved away from the inverted guard and the 50/50, more to a game that involves seated wrestling and sweeping directly to pass. Lots of back attacks and top game chokes like darces and guillotines. I feel like everyone in BJJ in a year or two behind the top guys. Everyone starts to learn Marcelo's back game and he started doing guillotines and north/south chokes on everyone. Everyone learned Jeff Glover's deep half game and he evolved. Just watch his matches for the 2011 ADCC Trials. People thought Ryan just had 50/50 heel-hooks and inverted guard triangles and now he's choking everyone from the back and finishing darces from the full mount. When people catch up to what Marcelo is doing now, he'll have new stuff. All the top guys are always switching things up, so to say none of "his 50/50 stuff would work" is ridiculous. Rafa Mendes is/was known for DLR guard back-takes and he just hit one of sickest arm drags to the back I've ever seen at the Abu Dhabi Pro No-Gi earlier this month.

In fact, if you want to discuss the 50/50, there have been some finishes in MMA recently from the 50/50. Toquinho got a reverse heel-hook from a body lock entry to the 50/50 and Shogun tried numerous 50/50 attempts on Jon Jones. Wilson Reis and Little Nog have been running deep half clinics on guys in MMA too. If someone can "lean over and punch you in the face" then you aren't doing the 50/50 right. Not that I would ever advocate using it in a streetfight but nonetheless.

Stupid argument.

Did you watch this match, or are you just speaking about other times you've seen Ryan compete? Ryan doesn't attempt any 50/50 guard whatsoever in this video.  He went inverted once for about a second.  Mostly I saw a wrestling switches, single leg attempts, front headlocks, sitting guard, half guard, and back take attempts.  With the possible exception of sitting guard, all of these can be used in real-life scenarios very effectively.

Ryan Hall stuff is solely for sport bjj. None of his 50/50 stuff would work in a real life situation becasue all you have to do is lean over and punch him in the face. Totally not what BJJ was ever intended to do.

I am a huge Marcelo fan and also a big Ryan fan.  While Marcelo certainly isn't going 100% competition speed here, to say that he is coasting and at all moments controlling the game is being a bit generous.  Ryan is able to block Marcelo's over/under bodylock pass repeatedly using the switch, which I've really yet to see anyone else do.  That pass (or at least that entry) is bread and butter for Marcelo.  Also, at :58 seconds, Ryan is able to execute his "Jedi Mind Trick" maneuver, reacting to Marcelo's backstep attempt by stretching out his upper body and making him miss, nearly taking his back.  Marcelo is able to fend him off and recover guard, but if you watch Ryan's latest Deep Half Guard vids, you might see what plays out in a different light.  In a competition scenario, Marcelo would probably overwhelm Ryan at this point in their careers.  But in any case, it is such a pleasure to see these two guys training together, I learned a lot from watching it.

@ Fabe your right! Marcelo was just going through the motion. No disrespect to Ryan.

Guys,Guys,Guys, u have to understand that Marcelo wasn't going hard and/or looking for submission. They were just rolling with respect.

Ryan really worked the switch in this video. Looks like he is working on his wrestling. Fun to watch!

Yea he changed things up a bit definitely, but still not shooting for triangles..? Anyways, what happened to the first two rolls they did; there was a flowing video they had and then a sparring one. Both are gone, all that's left is the video of their discussion, weird.

Great roll!! I really appreciate videos like these.  I think that the different styles really make for a great rolling session,  Every time I watch Ryan roll I'm impressed by how slippery he seems.
