3 Part Lesson — Marcelo counters the 2on1 from guard: [I] If you can help it, never allow your open to settle in on a grip of your sleeve. Smack his grip off of your wrist before your opponent has a chance to harden his fist with material. [II] If you cannot knock off his grip on your sleeve, spin your hand over the top of his wrist and use your free hand to open up his outside lapel. Use this grip to quickly feed your hand that is caught in the 2on1 over to the same-side collar which allows you to prevent the control from exposing your side. This grip can allow for a quick pass after the transition has been made. [III] If you do not have enough time to reach for the same-side collar grip, you can settle for the closer cross-side grip on his jacket's collar/lapel. Use your free hand to cross his chest and post on his shoulder to help square up your angle. Eventually, you will have to make the jump across and transfer from the cross collar to the same-side grip in order to escape the control.
