Grip Fighting from Standing → Breaking Gi Grips from Standing
2 Part Lesson — Marcelo enacts a grip-fighting scenario while standing: [I] During the exchange and assembling of grips, or Kumigata, if your opponent tries to grab ahold of your collar, try to intercept his hand before he can settle the fabric and harden his fist. If he gets his fingers around the lapel, meet his wrist with both hands and yank it straight away as you lean back forcefully. If you cannot readily break the grip after it settles on your jacket, switch directions and enclose the opponent with counter-grips on his kimono to help stabilize your standing position before pulling guard or countering his takedown. [II] If your opponent tries to break your grips, bring yourself even close to his body with a strong pull. This can be facilitated by making a grip over-the-shoulder and behind-the-back, in the style of a Russian-Grip.
