2 Part Drill — Marcelo implements an exercise for escaping heelhooks: [I] Marcelo sets the timer for two minute rounds where one partner on top starts in a leg entanglement (in this case 50/50) with his foot centered on the bottom partner's chest. If the bottom player with the leglock position can tuck his partner's foot inside the armpit and clasp the hands together for an ankle-lock or heel-hook, they restart. [II] Marcelo advises his students to stay on top and clinch with urgency, rather than immediately falling back to kick out of the hold. If one cannot swing their leg back under the hips to safety on either side of the opponent's body, then you can free your knee-line and kick-out of the lock.
