2 Part Lesson — Marcelo outlines some rules for standing or kneeling against the guard: [I] If your opponent opens his Closed Guard while you are standing to begin playing offensively from his back, hide your hips from his feet by using your elbows to knock them away as you drop your base and point your lead knee to the outside. [II] You can always drop back down to your knees to pass the Open Guard after you break the Closed Guard from standing, as long as you don't give up a dominant grip. If your opponent manages to place his foot on your lead hip and extends you away, push his leg to the inside and drop to your knee to avoid letting him snake his legs under your base for a sweep.
