Straight Footlock Escape from Open Guard
3 Part Lesson — Marcelo explains his preemptive tactics against fallaway footlocks: [I] The Butterfly Guard (Seated/Upright Open Guard) affords the guard player the best chance of evading and escaping attacks to your legs. If your opponent shoves your shoulders or lifts your feet up to place your back on the mat and open up space around your legs, be cautious of a potential Ankle-Lock, Toe-Hold, Heel-Hook, et al. that can be launched from the Standing Position. Laterally rotate your foot outwards away from your midline as you retract your foot through the gap in his or her control and complement the extraction with a forceful kick to their body from your opposite leg. [II] If your opponent binds your hip as he falls back with your foot under his or her control, immediately seek whichever path forward that grants you access to the opponent's head and/or arms, even if it means compromising your balance. It is too important to close the gap between your foot and upper body when under attack. Various methods can be employed to disentangle your hips from the opponent's legs, but not before first taking away the space for submission. [III] Do not deviate from the plan of closing the distance and attaching yourself to the opponent's upper body; if you retain your position on bottom or trade balance and base for space, you will give your opponent ample opportunity to seek a finish.
