Breaking Gi Grips from Standing
3 Part Lesson — Marcelo masks his emotions at the onset of a match by focusing on the battle for grips: [I] If you can intercept your opponent's hand before they can settle onto your jacket collar, push it away and seek an offensive grip of your own. If it does manage to make it through your defense and lands, forcibly yank the grip off with both hands. Accompany the press away by leaning your back in the opposite direction of the tug. If your opponent catches a grip over your shoulder and on your back, push their shoulder and knock their arm outward from the inside. [II] If they are strong, spin to the outside and smack the arm from the opposite direction, inward against the elbow. [III] If they are pulling your hips in close for a possible throw or foot-sweep, post off of their hip with a belt grip and hunt for a Single Leg Takedown.
