2 Part Lesson — Marcelo breaks the Closed Guard after getting Lumberjacked: When kneeling inside your opponent's Closed Guard, you need to win the battle between the hands; if your opponent gains control over your wrists, he can begin to attack, if you can seize grips, you are safe. If he or she avoids the game, just pop up to your feet where you hands can begin working against a leg. Make grips on the inside of the pants around the inner thigh and don't allow your hands to roll over to the outside where your the slack defeats your pressure. If your opponent scoops up your lead leg with an Underhook, take your weight off of that side and remain balanced up on your trail leg. If he or she starts to knock you down with the Lumberjack Sweep aka Muscle Sweep, try to break open the Closed Guard before your fall. Immediately, hide your elbows inside to prevent him or her from reclosing the guard around your waist. [03:27] If you fall back down and the guard remains closed, lean heavily toward the side opposite of your trapped leg. Somuchso, you should even use the weight of your head to help throw yourself to the side in which you are kneeling and can continue breaking the Closed Guard. Don't let your opponent pull your near arm into extension; keep your grips on the pants firm and dig yourself out. If he or she opens to attack, prepare to prevent the submission attempt and also avoid getting placed back inside the Closed Guard.
