2 Part Lesson — Marcelo smashes through strong defensive framing: Find the middle zone between your hips elevated too high up off the mat and your weight bearing down heavily on your knees; if your hips are up, you can be swept more readily or recovered against, while if your knees are down, your opponent can freely push you away. Stay off your knees, keep your hips low, push from your toes, and drive underneath your opponent's elbow to occupy his or her armpits with Double Underhooks. If the near-side armpit is defended, keep the far-side under-hook and apply the Over/Under Pass versus Half Guard. If the far-side armpit is defended, claim the near-side under-hook and implement a Cross-Over Knee-Cut to the opposite side out of the Half Guard. [02:26] If you cannot readily dig underneath either side armpit, being using your grips to help turn the opponent up onto their side (either side). The goal now is to go over, around, and behind the opponent's triceps to force open the space necessary for either the Near-Side or Far-Side Underhooks.
