Breaking the Closed Guard
1 Part Lesson -- Paul walks us through the basics for a standing-style breaking of your opponent's Closed Guard. Manage your weight so that your body doesn't shift past the wall defined by your lapel grip. Step up on the same side as the arm you use to hold the gi jacket; otherwise you risk getting swept with a simple Scissor Sweep. Once you force your opponent to uncross his or her toes and ankles, define the position by posing on the inside against the legs. Create a barrier with the profiles of your body so that your opponent can no longer place a foot on your chest or hips.
