2 Part Lesson -- Marcelo relates booting up a computer to escaping a dangerous Closed Guard: You must survey your opponent's controls in an overview and systematically address each in a specific way before breaking out. Run through a checklist of potential threats, starting with grips on your sleeves. If you opponent is keeping their hands away, pop up and break open the legs. If they have grips on your sleeves, hand-fight until you control their wrists and can stand up uninterrupted by a tug on your arms. If they have a Collar Grip, use both hands to strip it away from your jacket and keep control of their arm afterwards. If they pull out the skirt-tail end of your lapel, don't let them begin weaving it around your torso. Control either of their arms and interfere with any grip-switches. If it makes it behind your head, bump their elbow and duck under to clear the loop. [05:27] If your opponent is sneakily grabbing the outside part of your pant at the knee, quickly scoop up their arm and break the grip before they can control your opposite sleeve for the Flower/Xande Sweep. Prop up your other leg to prevent a sweep towards that side. Eventually, make it up to your feet to break open the guard. If they dive and underhook your leg, work to sprawl your leg back until they lose their grip, or simply step up with your other leg to post and base against any sweeps.
