Marcelo and Marcus help Kanan understand an important concept when applying a technique: An attacking move isn't complete until your opponent concedes and ceases reaction. Oftentimes, players that garner success with a particular technique will stop themselves short when a savvy opponent doesn't conform to their expectations. Keep moving until your opponent cannot appropriately defend your attack and you objectively conquer the position. If well-timed, a Knee-Slide Pass may finish as soon as you land on the opposite side of your opponent's guard; however, don't conflate this result with the effectiveness of your initial attack. If your opponent counters your Knee-Slide by framing, run yourself around and drive into them while pummeling your head and arms for a clinch. If they manage to insert their leg back inside, quickly swat it away before it can take effect and push you out of control.

This is very helpful. I'm constantly stuck with people who can hold me out for long periods where it feels harder to get past their hands than their legs.
