Marcelo teaches his advanced class about the importance of showing strength via endurance: Appearing strong and formidable isn't about intimidation, rather it is about not giving your opponent any confidence by appearing as an easy target or showing them signs of weakness. Everything you do must maintain the semblance of someone who won't go down without a fight; from the shaking of hands at the beginning of a match, to tying your belt around your waist at the end. Learning to fight this way takes practice. Instill this mentality by training multiple rounds without rest against several fresh partners. Even when you must tap-out in defeat from a submission, continue to show your strength by restarting your round with stoic confidence and staying on the mat. On the other hand, it is important when applying this training to not take advantage of your training partners and excessively bully them when they are trying to learn this particular skill in this way. You can still push your partner without resorting to an overly aggressive style of play. Remain technical and help foster good training habits between you and your partners.
