Marcelo gives Halie some advice on how to stay stable inside a strong Closed Guard: Don't wait for your opponent to capitalize on any weight, size, or strength discrepancies that may exist between the two of you; the moment you recognize that your opponent is looking to heavily offset your balance in a particular direction, immediately look to counter and react in kind. Reinforce your base by widening your knees and make grips on your opponent's center-line. You may need to prop yourself up off of your knees and onto your hands and feet to help defend your opponent's tilting movements. Ultimately, you will need to posture yourself up and out of the guard by standing upright in solid base to break open their ankles and begin passing.
