Over/Under Pass vs Half-Guard, Under-Hook & Head-Control from Side-Control
Lesson Part 2 of 3 -- Marcelo troubleshoots some common scenarios for the Over/Under Pass: If your opponent is turning over onto their side and hiding the space for your Under-Hook well, you may not be able to pummel your hand inside the space first; sometimes doing this can lead to your opponent trapping your arm and rolling you towards the far-side. When this happens, dig your elbow inside first, but keep your hand above their arm, allowing your fore-arm to act as a frame. If your hand dips below their arm along with your elbow, you're asking for your arm to become trapped if they happen to grip deeply around your back-side. Wedge your frame inside just enough to begin making space for stronger hand posts until you can finally pummel your hand inside by their hand and claim your Under-Hook. If your opponent is hiding their opposite elbow close to their knee on that side, use the Cross-Face/Head-Control to bring their upper-body away from their lower-body, thus increasing the elbow-knee gap for your own free leg. Try starting with your free knee high up towards the pass, as opposed to sprawled far away, so that you can readily place your foot on top of their Half-Guard when you've controlled their near-side arm with the Over/Under Control. Don't raise your hips up high when trying to clear your leg from their Half-Guard; doing so leaves an opportunity for your opponent to find an off-balancing movement that could impede your progress. Keep your center of mass lower towards the ground and return back to Under-Hook & Head-Control from the Over/Under on their elbow in order to give yourself the best chance of immobilizing your opponent and securing the points for the pass.
