Marcelo warns Gianni about the dangers of staying in one guard position for too long: When your opponent is keeping their balance well when you have them placed inside your Single-Leg X, you may need to either keep at breaking their base with more frequent and erratic attacks, or you might want to consider switching for the "Full" X-Guard Position. Generally, it is hard for an opponent to develop the skills necessary to keep their defense intact against both forms of these guards. Going for the Joga-fora-no-Lixo (Take-Out-the-Trash Sweep, Take-Up/Take-Down Sweep, et al.) by hoisting your opponent's leg on top of your shoulder will be helpful in at least resetting your positioning if you happen to lose control during a sweep.
