Advanced Lesson Part 2 of 2 -- Marcelo forces his opponent to lose back control by making it too high over top: Escaping from the back can become a great relief during a match, as long as you have enough time to retaliate; it is important to defend yourself effectively and quickly so that you may turn the table and begin attacking your opponent. When your opponent has you defending from the Turtle-Position and they have Seat-Belt Control, initially try to roll away from their hooks and land onto their weak-side before they have a chance to follow you and set their hooks. However, if your opponent manages to place both hooks in, luckily it should be much easier to bridge off the ground and set yourself onto the weak-side where your chances of escape dramatically increase. If your opponent hasn't set the top-hook in yet, or if they take it out to defend against your bridge by posting, deal with their bottom-hook next; use your top leg to pry off their back-hook so that you can clear it with your hips and skip over their bottom-leg directly into a hip-heist. Swing your legs and turn yourself over, returning to Turtle all the while defending your neck. If your opponent follows you up when you make it to your knees, they may have your hips covered and ready to catch you with their back-hooks again if you roll. When this happens, you are primed to reverse the position by way of a slow shoulder-throw over the top. Secure their choking arm with at least one of your hands while you use the other to help post of the mat and gain elevation into a Tripod-Position. Tightly defend your elbow-knee space to prevent them from setting their hooks and slant your back downward while continuing to pull at their choking-arm so your opponent slides off landing on bottom. If your opponent has a grip on your collar and it is close to slipping underneath your chin, abandon raising your hips up until you loosen up the threat and have enough time to safely escape.
