Marcelo & Matheus drill the sequence taught by guest instructor, Fabio Gurgel, in an afternoon advanced Gi class: Refer to the following link for the full lesson as shown as demonstrated by Marcelo ("Uke," the receiver, antagonist, technical opposition, et al.) & Fabio ("Tori," the apposition, agonist, et al.) himself; https://www.mginaction.com/VideoDetails.aspx?VideoId=30923 also entitled, "De-la-Riva Guard, Single-Leg from Sit-Up Guard, Ankle-Pick from Reverse-DLR Guard." [0:12] Notice how Marcelo expertly appends to the sweep a connection into his North/South Choke attack series while still holding onto his opponent's lapel. [0:28] Prepending the wrestle-up with an Over-Back Grip as opposed to a grip on the collar is much harder to accomplish in time before your opponent has a chance to posture up and find a way to break your controls. [1:21] If your opponent doesn't push down on your knee to relieve some of the pressure from your DLR-Hook, keeping their hand posting/gripping your torso, pummel your hand inside and frame against their biceps as you look to sit-up and catch their lead-leg; obtaining inside position with your forearm will help deflect your opponent away from your armpit and prevent the Under-Hook as you transition into Sit-Up Guard. [3:02] Marcelo is reminded of his preferred attack from DLR-Guard, i.e. shooting a Deep DLR-Hook and transitioning into a Crab-Ride (Baby-Bolo, et al.). [3:42] Marcelo experiments with a Hook-Lift variation that resembles a much more traditional overhead Kuzushi similar to his off-balances from Butterfly-Guard; this hooking behind the far-leg helps guide the opponent's ankle into your hand to make the pick perhaps at the cost of generating forward momentum. This variation could prove ideal when your opponent is overtly driving you backwards with their knee trapped against your chest, hence the lessening of the necessity for the Inverted DLR-Hook to apply leverage while also preventing a strong Back-Step counter. [6:53] Normally, if there is enough room, Marcelo would transition to Shin-on-Shin Guard for a Single-Leg X-Guard Entry; however, if your opponent drives you into the Reverse-DLR Guard and hits a Back-Step, Fabio shows that you can connect with a follow-up attack. Hook-Sweep your opponent by weaving your foot behind their far-knee and heisting your hips out from underneath of their Back-Step onto your knees. [8:19] Fabio maintains distance by framing against his opponent's shoulder when they Back-Step and look to close the distance for chest-on-chest contact. When his opponent breaks through the frame, he meets them with a tricky Over-Back Grip and Roll-Over Sweep (like a combination of Sumi-Gaeshi & Teppo-Gaeshi, the Corner-Reversal and Gun-Reversal, respectively).
